רבי יהודה בר נחמני

Rabbi Yehudah bar Nachmani was an amora who served as the meturgeman of Rabbi Shimon ben Lakish (Reish Lakish), conveying his teacher’s teachings to the assembled students.

In Gittin 60b he brings a teaching reconciling two phrases in Shemot 34:27 — “Write for yourself these words” and “for by the mouth of these words.” From this apparent contradiction he teaches that words meant to be written (Torah she-bichtav) may not be recited by heart, while words of the Oral Torah (Torah she-be’al peh) may not be set down in writing, alongside the related teaching brought by the school of Rabbi Yishmael.
