Biography
Rabbi Yosi bar Zavida was an amora whose teachings appear in both the Talmud and the Midrash. In the Bavli he is brought in connection with matters of halachah and Scriptural interpretation. In Berachot he raises an objection from the verse in Nechemyah, “You are Hashem the Hashem who chose Avram,” and in Horayot he is cited in a discussion of Sumchos’s reasoning, illustrated through the case of one who brings his atonement-offering at twilight, where doubt remains whether the atonement took effect by day or after nightfall, such that no asham talui is brought.
He also appears in the aggadic literature, in Devarim Rabbah, in connection with the verse “And Hashem said to Moshe, behold your days draw near,” where the discussion turns to the law of one whose deceased lies before him, who is exempt from the recitation of Shema.
Where traditions differ. In Berachot and Horayot the teaching is brought in the name of Rabbi Yosi bar Avin, with Rabbi Yosi bar Zavida given as an alternative attribution ("ve'itema").
רבי יוסי בר זבידא היה אמורא בארץ ישראל בדור הרביעי. הוא מוזכר פעמים רבות בשני התלמודים במחלוקות עם חברו רבי יונה. בתלמוד הירושלמי הוא מכונה "רבי יוסי" סתם ולפעמים "רבי יסא". היה תלמידם של רבי אילא ורבי זעירא, לימד בישיבת רבי אילא ולאחר מכן בישיבתו, והיה אחד מחותמי הסוגיות של מסכת נזיקין בתלמוד הירושלמי. ישב בטבריה, ומשנתרבו הגזרות בא"י ירד עם חברו רבי יוסי ברבי בון לבבל, ולאחר שהות קצרה שב לא"י והיה גדול הדור, וכל חכמי הדור החמישי לאמוראי ארץ ישראל היו תלמידיו, ביניהם רבי מנא תלמידו המובהק, ובנו רבי אלעזר ברבי יוסי (האמורא).
Jose bar Zebida was a Jewish Amora sage of the Land of Israel, of the fourth generation of the Amora era. He is cited in the Jerusalem Talmud and the Midrash merely as R. Jose.
