Biography
Rav Yosi Gelilaah was an amora of Eretz Yisrael in the third to fourth generation, apparently a talmid of Rav Yosi bar Chanina and a chaver of Rav Yona. The Talmud Bavli relates that he once moved a lamp on Shabbat in the presence of Rav Yosi bar Chanina, relying on the view of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, and his teacher was displeased with him. His statements in the Talmud Yerushalmi come in the name of Rav Yosi bar Chanina, with Rav Yona joining in the testimony — among them, that one does not ask a halachah in the presence of a meit, and that a stricter measure completes a lighter measure, but a lighter measure does not complete a stricter one.
Where traditions differ. The name Rabbi Yosi HaGelili most commonly refers to the tanna of that name; the sources here describe the amora Rav Yosi Gelila'ah of the third to fourth generation of Eretz Yisrael amoraim.
