רב חנא בר חנילאי

Rav Chana bar Chanilai was an amora whose teachings and conduct appear in the Talmud Bavli. He is portrayed as a great scholar (gavra rabba) deeply absorbed in his learning, and several stories record his close connection with Rav Huna. In Megillah, his humility is highlighted in a famous episode: when Rav Huna was carrying a spade on his shoulder and Rav Chana bar Chanilai sought to carry it for him, Rav Huna declined, unwilling to be honored at the expense of his fellow’s dignity—a story cited in Mesillat Yesharim as a model of humility.

His halachic activity is recorded across several tractates. In Beitzah he is brought in a case involving meat hung on a doorpost, with Rav Huna ruling on whether he could take it on Yom Tov, the discussion turning on whether his great absorption in study had distracted his mind from it. He also raises an objection there concerning dough fit for dogs and its obligation in challah, eiruv, and other matters. In Berachot, his house is the setting for an exchange between Ulla and Rav Chisda about the effect of a sigh upon a person’s body.
