רב חביבי מחוזנאה

Rav Chavibi of Mechuza was an amora of Babylonia, identified by his connection to the city of Mechuza. In the passages where he appears, he is consistently recorded engaging Rav Ashi, raising questions and challenges in the give-and-take of the study hall.

His exchanges range across several tractates. In Bava Kamma he presses Rav Ashi on the laws of one who slaughters an animal that is found to be a tereifah, drawing out the principle of whether the act of slaughter takes effect only at its conclusion, and probing the view of Rabbi Yochanan on chullin slaughtered in the Temple courtyard. In Eruvin he raises a difficulty concerning the corner projection in a measurement of boundaries, and in Shabbat he brings a proof from the verse in Shemot describing the day the Mishkan was erected — the day that, as taught, took ten crowns, being first for the works of creation, first for the princes, first for the priesthood, the service, the descent of fire, the eating of consecrated offerings, and the dwelling of the Shechinah.
