רב דודאי בן נחמן

Rav Dodai ben Nachman

Rav Dodai ben Nachman — Gaon of Pumbedita who, with his brother the Gaon of Sura, kept Anan ben David from the exilarchate.

Biography

Rav Dodai ben Nachman, called in some sources Rav Dorai, was among the chachamim of Bavel in the eighth century and served as Gaon of the yeshiva of Pumbedita from 4521/761 to 4524/764. The sources preserve few details of his life; he was a brother of the well-known Rav Yehuda ben Nachman, Gaon of the yeshiva of Sura in the years 4519/759–4522/762.

The two brothers acted together at a fateful hour for Bavel: when the seat of the Reish Galuta fell vacant with the passing of the exilarchs Shlomo ben Chisdai and Yitzchak Iskoy ben Shlomo, they blocked Anan ben David, a kinsman of the departed exilarchs — the man who afterwards founded the Karaite breakaway — from rising to the exilarchate.

Dodai ben Nahman was a Babylonian-Jewish scholar of the 8th century and gaon of the Talmudic academy at Pumbedita (761–764). Little is known of his life. He was a brother of the famed Judah ben Nahman, gaon at Sura (759–762), and with him was instrumental in preventing the eventual founder of Karaism, Anan ben David from succeeding to the exilarchate made vacant by the death of Solomon ben Hasdai and Isaac Iskoy ben Solomon, Anan's kinsmen.
