Biography
Rav Yehudah ben Rav Shmuel bar Shilat (רב יהודה בן רב שמואל בר שילת) was an amora of Bavel of the second generation, the son of the amora Rav Shmuel bar Shilat, who lived in the first and second generations. Close to twenty statements are brought in his name in the Talmud Bavli, most of them in the name of Rav, and so he is generally counted as a talmid of Rav. He was not known in Eretz Yisrael and is not mentioned at all in the Talmud Yerushalmi.
Nearly all of his statements are in halacha, on matters such as the various berachot, birkat hazimun and hilchot eruvin, with a few in aggadah. Among them, in the name of Rav: just as joy is lessened when Av enters, so joy is increased when Adar enters; those seated at a meal may not eat anything until the one who broke bread has tasted; and nine who ate grain together with one who ate vegetables join together for zimun. In aggadah he teaches, in the name of Rav, that from a man’s eulogy one can tell whether or not he is a ben Olam HaBa (one who merits the next world).

Where traditions differ. His teachings are brought “mishmei d'Rav,” in Rav's name, which some take to mean he did not hear them from Rav himself and was not truly his talmid. The Gemara in Berachot 47a places him in the days of Rav Safra, of the fourth generation, which would make him an amora of the third generation.
