רב יוסף בר אבא

Rav Yosef bar Abba was an amora whose teachings appear across several tractates of the Gemara. In Avodah Zarah he brings reports of Rabbah bar Yirmiyah, who came to their place carrying a baraita with him — once on the laws of treating and oiling trees during the Shemittah year as opposed to during Chol HaMoed, and once on a case of a gentile who took stones from a Markulis idol and paved roads and theaters with them.

He also carries rulings in the name of earlier authorities. In Bava Batra he brings, in the name of Mar Ukva citing Shmuel, the law governing the return of betrothal gifts depending on whether the husband or the wife had died. In Ketubot he cites Rabbi Menachem in the name of Rabbi Ami concerning one who betroths a woman with less than the value of a perutah and then lives with her, and whether she requires a get from him. His recorded statements thus center on practical halachah, drawn from the chain of teachings he received and passed along.
