Biography
Shimon ben Hillel was the son of Hillel the Elder and nasi of the Sanhedrin after him, in the generations before the churban of the second Beit HaMikdash. The Gemara counts him in the braita of the nesi’im: “Hillel and Shimon, Gamliel and Shimon held their nesiut while the Beit HaMikdash stood, one hundred years” — the chain that passed from Hillel to Shimon his son, to Rabban Gamliel the Elder his son, and to Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel after him.
The Rambam, in his introduction to the Mishneh Torah, sets him in the chain of mesorah itself: Shimon ben Hillel received the Torah from Hillel and his beit din, in the generation of Rabban Yochanan ben Zakkai. He stands as one of those quiet links on whom the chain depends — the son of the greatest of the nesi’im and the grandfather of Rabban Gamliel the Elder, bridging them in a silence that some have found fitting for the one to whom tradition would assign the saying: all my days I grew up among the chachamim, and I found nothing better for the body than silence.
Where traditions differ. Some scholars have suggested that the "Shimon his son" of Pirkei Avot (1:17), who taught that nothing befits the body better than silence, is this Shimon ben Hillel — though the accepted traditional reading assigns that mishnah to his grandson, Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel the Elder.

Shimon or Simeon ben Hillel was the son of Hillel the Elder. Little is known about him. Simeon was the father of Gamaliel I, and grandfather of Simeon ben Gamaliel.
