Biography

Rabbi Yaakov of Kfar Nevuraya was an amora whose teachings are preserved in the Midrash. He appears in the aggadic discussions surrounding the verses of Kohelet and Bamidbar, where his name is brought alongside the comments of the Rabbanan and other sages in expounding Scripture.

In the passages where he is cited, the discussion centers on the wisdom granted to Shlomo HaMelech — the verse “And Hashem gave wisdom to Shlomo” (Melachim I 5:9) and its comparison to the sand of the sea — together with the verse from Kohelet, “All this I tested with wisdom; I said I will be wise, but it was far from me” (Kohelet 7:23). His teachings thus belong to the aggadic and homiletic engagement with these texts as recorded in Kohelet Rabbah and Bamidbar Rabbah.
