יצחק יעקב רבינוביץ

Rav Yitzchak Yaakov Rabinovich (5614/1854–20 Adar 5679/1919), R’ Itzele Ponevezher, was among the gedolei Torah of his generation and one of the fathers of the analytic derech halimud that rules the yeshiva world to this day. Born in Shereshov, he was known as the iluy of Shereshov from childhood. As a young man he would bring his chiddushim to Rav Yosef Dov Soloveitchik, the Beit HaLevi, in Brisk — and there became the friend and chavruta of his son, Rav Chaim. The two young giants, each from his own mind, forged the same revolution: learning built on logical definition and the depth of the sugya, in place of pilpul. It was said of them that Rav Chaim taught what the chachamim said, and R’ Itzele pursued also why they said it.

In 5649 the Alter of Slabodka called him to head Yeshivat Knesset Yisrael, which he conquered with his first shiur; hundreds of talmidim passed before him in five years, until differences over the young mussar movement — whose introduction into the yeshivot he opposed — led him to the rabbanut of Gorzhd, and in 5655/1895 of Ponevezh. Telz sought him as rosh yeshiva and Etz Chaim of Yerushalayim as its head; the people of Ponevezh, bound to him for his humility and his care for the poor, would not let him go. From 5669/1909 he stood at the head of the famed kibbutz of Ponevezh — twenty chosen masmidim, sustained by the Wissotzky family’s endowment — where his thrice-weekly shiurim shook the yeshiva world; to have learned in R’ Itzele’s kibbutz was itself a certificate of greatness.

The remnants of his Torah survive in the notes and letters of talmidim. In the typhus epidemic that struck Ponevezh after the First World War he tended the sick with mesirut nefesh, was infected, and was niftar on 20 Adar 5679 (1919); years later his remains were brought to Vilna and rest beside Rav Chaim Ozer Grodzensky. The yeshiva of Ponevezh that rose after him, rebuilt by Rav Yosef Shlomo Kahaneman and rebuilt again in Bnei Brak, carries the name of the town whose Torah he made great.
