פָּרָשַׁת חַיֵּי שָׂרָה

Parshat Chayei Sarah tells us how the first generation passes on and the second is established in the land. Sarah dies at 127 in Chevron. Avraham mourns her and buys the cave of Machpelah and the field around it from Efron the Chittite for four hundred shekels of silver, paid in full before all the people, and buries Sarah there — the first piece of the land that belongs to Avraham's family.

Avraham then sends his servant to his family in Aram Naharayim to find a wife for Yitzchak, making him swear not to take a wife from the daughters of Kenaan. At the well the servant asks Hashem for a sign, and before he finishes praying Rivkah comes out, gives him to drink and waters all his camels. Her family agrees that the match is from Hashem, Rivkah says "I will go," and she is blessed and sent off. Yitzchak brings her into his mother's tent, marries her, and loves her, and is comforted after Sarah's death. Avraham marries Keturah and has more sons, but gives all he has to Yitzchak. He dies at 175, and Yitzchak and Yishmael bury him beside Sarah in the cave of Machpelah. The parsha ends with the generations of Yishmael and his death at 137. Everything Avraham built now rests with Yitzchak and Rivkah.
