Sefer Bereishit Summary

Sefer Bereishit, the first of the five books of the Torah, tells us how the world began and how the family of Yisrael began. Hashem creates the world in six days and rests on the seventh. Adam and Chava are placed in Gan Eden, eat from the forbidden tree, and are sent out; Kayin kills Hevel; ten generations later mankind is so wicked that Hashem brings the flood and saves only Noach and his family. After the flood the nations spread out from Noach's sons, build the Tower of Bavel, and are scattered. Then the Torah turns from all of mankind to one man, Avraham.

Hashem calls Avraham to leave his land for the land of Kenaan, promises him the land and descendants beyond counting, makes a covenant with him, and tests him, last of all at the Akeidah. The brit (covenant) passes to Yitzchak, and then to Yaakov, who receives the blessings, flees to Lavan, marries Leah and Rachel, and returns with twelve sons and a new name, Yisrael. The last third of the sefer follows Yosef: sold by his brothers, brought down to Mitzrayim (Egypt), raised from prison to rule the land, and reunited with the brothers who bow to him as he dreamed. Yaakov and his whole household come down to Mitzrayim, and the sefer ends with Yaakov's blessings to the tribes, his burial in the cave of Machpelah, and Yosef's death, with the children of Yisrael in Mitzrayim holding Hashem's promise to bring them out.

Bereishit has fifty perakim and twelve parshiyot, from Bereishit to Vayechi, read from the Shabbat after Simchat Torah into the middle of Tevet. Each perek on TorahSages carries the Hebrew text with the mefarshim of the Mikraot Gedolot, and each parsha has its own summary page and its leining.
