הרב אבא יוסי בן חנן

Abba Yossi ben Chanan was a tanna whose teachings are preserved across the halachic literature of the Mishnah and the early midrashei halachah. He appears in matters touching the avodah of the Beit HaMikdash, especially the handling of the bird offering. On the verse in Vayikra describing the removal of the crop (mur’ah), his teaching is brought in the Sifra and quoted by Rashi: that the kohen takes the gizzard (korkavan) along with it. The same view is recorded in Zevachim, where he holds that one takes the crop and removes its gizzard together.

He also figures in the laws of the sotah in tractate Sotah. There he teaches that if the woman has merit, it suspends her punishment for three months — the time needed to recognize a fetus — a position set opposite that of Rabbi Eliezer ben Yitzchak of Kfar Darom, who holds nine months, derived from the verse “and she shall be cleared and shall bear seed.” His name appears among the tannaim whose views the Gemara weighs in reconciling the mishnah.
