רבי עקיבא בן יוסף

Rabbi Akiva

Tannaic master (c. 50–135 CE) active in Lod and Caesarea, frequently cited in aggadah on faith, repentance, and divine providence.

Biography

Rabbi Akiva ben Yosef stands among the foundational figures of the Tannaic period, and his teachings echo through the cited library across both halachic and aggadic discussion.

The passages also preserve his personal example as a model of contentment in poverty: Pele Yoetz recalls his words to his wife about a man so poor he lacks even straw (Nedarim 50a), invoked to teach acceptance of one’s lot and gratitude. He appears, too, in narrative settings alongside contemporaries—as in the account of sages walking on the road and hearing the distant tumult of a great city (cited in Akeidat Yitzchak)—reflecting how often later authors drew on episodes involving him to frame discussions of faith, providence, and consolation in exile. Rabbi Akiva famously started learning Torah only at the age of 40, and lived to 120, surviving thousands of his students who perished in a plague (the basis for the mourning period between Pesach and Lag Ba’omer). Five of his surviving students became the leaders of the next generation and permeated the oral law as found in the Mishna. Rabbi Meir, Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, Rabbi Yehuda bar Ilai, Rabbi Yose ben Halafta, and Rabbi Elazar ben Shamua.
