Biography
Rabbi Yose ben Halafta was a tanna of the Mishnaic period. He was esteemed for his mastery of monetary law and judicial wisdom; the Yerushalmi (Sanhedrin) records that in the days of Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai, when monetary cases had lapsed, Rabbi Shimon declared that none was as expert in judgment as Rabbi Yose ben Halafta, and two men came before him to be judged.
He appears in the Midrash answering probing questions, often posed by a Roman matrona, on matters of Creation and providence. In one such exchange she asked him in how many days Hashem created His world, and he replied “in six,” citing the verse “For in six days Hashem made the heavens” (Shemot 20). His teachings are woven through the aggadic literature, including Bereshit Rabbah, Vayikra Rabbah, Ruth Rabbah, and Shir HaShirim Rabbah, where he is cited on the verses of the Torah and on themes of the righteous and the wicked.

Jose ben Helpetha, commonly known as Jose ben Halafta was a tanna of the fourth generation. He is the fifth-most-frequently mentioned sage in the Mishnah. Yose Ben Halafta is the one of two rabbis called Rabbi Yose in the Talmud; the other being Jose ben Zimra, an amora.
