Biography
Rav Tachlifa bar Ma’arava (west) was an amora of Eretz Yisrael among the first of the third generation. He merited to teach beraitot before Rabbi Yochanan — Menachot brings a question of Rabbi Yochanan settled by a beraita that Rav Tachlifa of the west taught him — but the main body of his own learning was before Rabbi Abbahu. He traveled down to Bavel regularly.
His title bar Ma’arava, “of the west,” is the name the amoraim of Bavel used for a man of Eretz Yisrael, which lay to their west, and it served to tell him apart from Rav Tachlifa of Bavel.
Where traditions differ. The gemara’s wording is cited both as Rav Tachlifa mi-ma’arava and as bar ma’arava.
רב תחליפא בר מערבא היה אמורא ארצישראלי מראשוני הדור השלישי. הוא זכה לשנות ברייתות לפני רבי יוחנן כמובא במסכת מנחות: "בעי רבי יוחנן, תנא ליה רב תחליפא ממערבא ...", אך עיקר ישיבתו הייתה לפני רבי אבהו.
Tachlifa of the West was an amora from Syria Palæstina who studied under Rabbi Abbahu. He often travelled to Babylonia.
