רבי יהושע אוניא

Rav Yehoshua Onia was an amora of Eretz Yisrael of the second or third generation. His name points to Ono in Yehuda as the place he came from or dwelt in. He is known for a number of beraitot that he taught, which are brought in the Talmud Yerushalmi. One of them fixes the reckoning of the years of orlah from the time the tree was planted rather than from the time it was grafted anew. Another holds a man liable to malkot even for keeping a quantity of chametz on Pesach smaller than a kezayit. He also brings the account of the talmidim of Beit Shammai who stood below and struck at the talmidim of Beit Hillel, to the point of bloodshed, over the many disputes between the two houses in fixing the halachot — the day on which eighteen matters were decreed, on eighteen the one house prevailed, and on eighteen they remained divided.
