Biography
Rabbi Zecharia ben HaKatzav was a tanna active in Judaea. He appears in halachic discussions of inheritance law, where his position is brought in the name of others: Rabbi Yosi beRabbi Yehuda and Rabbi Elazar beRabbi Yosi cite him in tractate Bava Batra as holding that a son and a daughter share equally in the mother’s estate, reasoning from the principle that “it is enough for what is derived from a logical inference to be like that from which it is derived” (dayo la-ba min ha-din lihyot ka-nidon). His view is examined in Bava Batra in connection with the question of whether one expounds the plural form of certain verses.
He is also recalled in tractate Ketubot, in the context of cases concerning women and the laws of permitted marriage, such as the status of a woman taken captive or found in a city under siege.
רבי זכריה בן הקצב היה תנא בארץ ישראל בן הדור הראשון.
