רב חנא בגדתאה

Rav Chana Bagdata’ah was an amora whose teachings appear across the Talmud in both halachic and aggadic settings. He is recorded bringing rulings in the name of Shmuel — for example, the law that a dislocated bone may be reset on Shabbat (Shabbat 148a) and rulings touching on eruvin and the laws of a mavoi whose beam or post was removed (Eruvin 81b, 95a), where he is shown in dialogue with Rav Yehudah.

He also taught matters of language and aggadah. In Ketubot 10b he explains that the term “almanah” relates to the word “maneh,” and he discusses the qualities of rain and of dates and their effects on the body. In Zevachim 9a he raises a sharp objection regarding the verses of the korban, drawing on the wording of “im kesev” and “im ez” in Vayikra to challenge how a derivation about the leftover of the Pesach offering could stand.

A personal scene is preserved in Berachot 54b: when Rav Yehudah recovered from illness, Rav Chana Bagdata’ah and the other sages came to him and blessed Hashem who gave him back to them rather than to the dust, to which Rav Yehudah replied that they had thereby exempted him from giving thanks himself.
