רב פפא

Rav Papa

Babylonian amora (c. 300–375 CE) frequently cited across the Talmud on halacha and aggada, from blessings and prayer to civil and ritual law.

Biography

Rav Papa was a Babylonian amora whose teachings are cited extensively throughout the literature of Chazal and the later codes that draw upon it. In matters of daily practice he is recorded ruling on blessings—stating that foods brought as part of a meal require no separate blessing before or after (Orach Chaim 177)—and on the proper times for meals, including the distinction for a Torah scholar absorbed in study (Orach Chaim 157).

His positions appear prominently in civil and commercial law, where he addresses the ownership of a laborer’s finds (Choshen Mishpat 270) and the validity of situmta, the merchant’s mark, as a recognized mode of acquisition (Choshen Mishpat 201). He is cited in disputes on the laws of betrothal documents (Even HaEzer 32) and on funeral and mourning customs (Yoreh De’ah 352). On the calendar of fasts and festivals he resolves an apparent contradiction about whether commemorative days are observed as fasts or feasts depending on conditions of peace and persecution (Orach Chaim 550).

Rav Papa also figures in aggadic and ethical teachings—such as his reflection that one who dons tefillin has his sins forgiven (Orach Chaim 37)—and a remark of his on study habits is invoked in mussar literature (Pele Yoetz 56). The frequency with which he appears across these tractates and codes attests to his central place in talmudic discourse.
