רב סחורה

Rav Sachora was an amora whose teachings appear across many tractates of the Talmud. He most often brings the words of Rav Huna in the name of Rav, and his statements are in turn quoted by Rava, who repeatedly opens with “Rava said in the name of Rav Sachora in the name of Rav Huna.” Through this chain he carries a wide range of halachic and aggadic teachings.

His halachic statements span many areas: the laws of the menorah and its lights in Menachot, chalitzah and refusal (mi’un) in Yevamot, the obligation regarding one who dwells in another’s courtyard without permission in Bava Kamma, the proper distance from filth for prayer in Berachot, and whether to mention Chanukah in Birkat Hamazon in Shabbat. On the aggadic side he brings the teaching on Mishlei 13:11 — that one who learns his Torah in large bundles will see it diminish, while one who gathers little by little will increase (cited in both Avodah Zarah and Eruvin) — and the teaching in Berachot on Yeshayahu, that Hashem crushes with afflictions the one in whom He delights.

Rava also recalls Rav Sachora as the one who explained to him the matter of the zuhama listron in Bava Metzia, reflecting a teaching relationship. In Nedarim he is recorded going out and finding an opening to release himself from a vow, citing Rebbi’s teaching on the upright path a person should choose.
