Biography
Rav Yose was a sage of the era of the Savoraim. He appears in the Gemara in connection with several teachings, though the brief citations that survive show him within larger talmudic discussions rather than as the center of extended debate. Savoraim were the redactors of the talmud, mostly after the time of the amoraim.
In Sanhedrin, a teaching brought in the name of Rav Yose bar Choni states that a person feels envy toward everyone except his own son and his student, supporting the point from Scripture. In Bava Metzia, Rav Yose bar Abba appears among those who question Rav Sheshet about a ruling of Rav Huna concerning lending against the market price and the practice of borrowing in one season and repaying in another. These passages place him within the give-and-take of halachic reasoning on matters of human character and the laws of lending.
Where traditions differ. The passages name 'Rav Yose bar Choni' and 'Rav Yose bar Abba'; whether these refer to the same sage as 'Rav Yose' is not clear from the material.
