רבינו פרץ

Rabbeinu Peretz ben Eliyahu of Corbeil (niftar c. 1295) was among the last of the Baalei HaTosafot in France; in the sefarim he is marked by the roshei teivot RaP and MaHaRPaSh, and English works call him Perez ben Elijah of Corbeil. His father was Rav Eliyahu of Tours, and he learned before Rav Yechiel of Paris, Rav Shmuel of Evreux, Rav Yaakov of Chinon and Rav Yitzchak of Corbeil. He stood at the head of the yeshiva in Corbeil, and among his talmidim were Rav Mordechai ben Hillel and Rav Chaim ben Shmuel ibn David, author of Tzror HaChaim. Traveling through Brabant and Germany he came to know the Maharam of Rothenburg, and the shiurim he gave on returning home drew the leading rabbanim of the age.

He wrote hagahot on the Amudei HaGolah — the Sefer Mitzvot Katan of his rebbi Rav Yitzchak of Corbeil — printed together with the text in Cremona in 5316/1556, and hagahot on the Tashbetz Katan, the collection of the practices of the Maharam of Rothenburg. He gathered and arranged collections of Tosafot on the Bavli, and composed a Sefer Peretz on the mesorah, which is no longer extant.

His own Tosafot, known as Tosafot Rabbeinu Peretz, are in our hands on Berachot, Eruvin, Sukkah, Beitzah, Yevamot, Bava Kamma, Bava Metzia, Makkot and Pesachim, and the Tosafot printed on the daf of Avodah Zarah are his as well; he wrote also on Nazir. Much of this passed through the hands of his talmidim and did not remain in its first form, and it was learned in Spain and in Italy already in the fourteenth century, though only part of it reached print. Tosafot Rabbeinu Peretz on Bava Kamma was first printed in Livorno in 5579/1819 by Rav Shlomo Venuno, from a manuscript so full of errors that it needed heavy correction; a fresh edition was brought out in 5744/1984 by Machon Or HaSefer of Yerushalayim, working from the Tosafot of a talmid of Rabbeinu Peretz preserved in the Shitah Mekubetzet on Bava Kamma and from manuscripts of the British Museum.
