שמואל בן שניאור מאיוורא

Samuel of Évreux

Of the last great baalei Tosafot — head of the school of Evreux whose talmidim included Rabbeinu Peretz and the author of the Smak.

Biography

Rabbeinu Shmuel of Evreux was a French baal Tosafot of the thirteenth century, of the last generation of that great school. He was the younger brother and talmid of Rabbeinu Moshe of Evreux, and together the brothers — the chachmei Evreux — produced the Tosafot of Evreux, whose chiddushim were woven into the printed Tosafot that stand on the page of every Gemara.

Rabbeinu Shmuel directed a yeshiva at Chateau-Thierry, and the roster of his talmidim tells his stature: Rabbeinu Peretz of Corbeil; Rabbeinu Yitzchak of Corbeil, author of the Sefer Mitzvot Katan; and Rabbeinu Chaim, the brother of the Rosh. He stood in learned correspondence with Rabbeinu Yechiel of Paris, and his interpretations are quoted throughout the Tosafot literature — the Tosafot printed on masechet Sotah are attributed to his hand, for their author there mentions Rabbeinu Moshe of Evreux as his brother. His words on Nazir are brought by the Rashba, and Rabbeinu Yonah of Gerona invokes his authority.

Where traditions differ. He is generally identified with the Shmuel ben Shneur whose explanations on Nazir are brought by the Rashba and whose authority Rabbeinu Yonah invokes, though older sources gave his father's name differently.
