Biography
Rabbi Abba bar Memel was an amora of Eretz Yisrael, of the second and third generations. He appears most often in the discussions of the beit midrash of Teveria headed by Rabbi Yochanan, alongside Rabbi Yochanan’s talmidim Rabbi Abahu and Rabbi Elazar, and with the sage who was his principal bar plugta, Rabbi Zeira. He is also found together with Rabbi Ami and Rabbi Asi, who were counted among his teachers — apparently in the years after Rabbi Yochanan’s passing — and he learned as well under Rabbi Oshaya.
Where traditions differ. Some identify him with the sage cited in the Talmud simply as "Rav Abba," but this identification is not certain.
