Biography
Rav Ashi was a Babylonian amora active in Avirya. He and his yeshiva compiled the Talmud.
He appears in everyday halachic discussion as well — on the breaking of bread over two loaves on Shabbat (citing what he observed of Rav Kahana), on laws of documents and weights and measures, and on the principle that no honor is shown to a teacher where Hashem’s name would be desecrated, recorded in his exchange with Ameimar. He also figures in aggadic material, such as defining the state of being half-asleep in Niddah, and in traditions about demons (shadim).

Rav Ashi (352–427) was a Babylonian Jewish rabbi, of the sixth generation of amoraim. He reestablished the Academy at Sura and was the first editor of the Babylonian Talmud.
