רב חנן בר אמי

Rav Chanan bar Ami appears in the Babylonian Talmud as a transmitter of earlier teachings, frequently citing Shmuel as well as conveying rulings of Rabbi Pedat in the name of Rabbi Yochanan. His statements cluster around matters of kashrut and ritual practice, particularly in tractate Chullin, where he is several times quoted on the laws of dietary preparation and eating arrangements.

Among the traditions recorded in his name is the observation that Rav would instruct his students in private according to the view of Rabbi Meir, yet expound publicly according to Rabbi Yehuda “on account of the ignorant” (Chullin 15a). He also transmits a permissive ruling regarding meat (Avodah Zarah 38a) and discusses the conditions under which guests may share a table (Chullin 107b). His recurring presence in Chullin, Avodah Zarah, and Niddah marks him chiefly as an authority on practical halachic detail.
