רבי שבתי

Rabbi Shabbetai

Rabbi Shabbetai, an amora cited in halachic and aggadic teachings, including in the name of Chizkiyah.

Biography

Rabbi Shabbetai was an amora whose teachings are preserved in both halachic and aggadic settings. In tractate Bava Batra he addresses the laws of documents, ruling on the matter of the two lines written above the signatures of witnesses, and explaining that a forger would not approach a scribe to commit his forgery — a teaching he brings in the name of Chizkiyah.

He also appears in the aggadic discussion of Vayikra Rabbah, in connection with the verse concerning a woman who experiences zivah, which is brought into the account of Yechanyah ben Yehoyakim at the time when Nevuchadnezzar came up to destroy Yerushalayim.

רבי שבתי היה אמורא מן הדור הראשון והשני לאמוראי ארץ ישראל. רבו של רב אסי.
