Biography
Rabbi Yusta bar Shunam was an amora whose teachings are preserved in the aggadic Midrashim. He appears in passages of midrashic exposition drawn together around verses such as “Iti miLevanon kallah” (“With me from Levanon, O bride”) from Shir HaShirim, where the relationship between Hashem and Israel is pictured through the imagery of a bride being brought to the chuppah.
His name is brought in Shir HaShirim Rabbah, Vayikra Rabbah, and Shemot Rabbah, among the voices gathered in these collections of aggadah that weave together verses of Tanach to draw out their deeper meanings.
רבי יוסטא בר שונם היה אמורא בדור החמישי לאמוראי ארץ ישראל, הנזכר בתלמוד הירושלמי ובמדרשים.
