Biography
Rabbi Elazar ben Azaria was a Tanna active in the Land of Israel whose teachings are preserved across the halachic midrashim on Vayikra and Bamidbar (Sifra and the Sifrei/Bamidbar Rabbah materials) and throughout the aggadic midrash on Genesis (Bereshit Rabbah). He appears alongside figures such as Rabbi Akiva and is recorded in narrative settings together with sages like Rabbi Yochanan ben Beroka and Rabbi Elazar ben Chasma.
His teachings range over ritual law, the laws of forbidden foods, the rationale for the commandments, and ethical reflection, and he is frequently quoted in both the legal and aggadic literature drawn upon here.

Eleazar ben Azariah was a 1st-century CE Jewish tanna, i.e. Mishnaic sage. He was of the second generation and a junior contemporary of Gamaliel II, Eliezer b. Hyrcanus, Joshua b. Hananiah, and Akiva.
