רבי אבינא

Rabbi Avina was an amora of the third generation who belonged to both Bavel and Eretz Yisrael. Born and raised in Bavel, he learned there under Rav Huna, Rav Yirmiyah bar Abba and Rav Chisda. The Gemara relates that he taught halachot in a town near Sura, and afterward went up to Eretz Yisrael, where he was counted among the great amoraim of the land and dealt with many of its chachamim — Rabbi Ami, Rabbi Zeira and Rabbi Yaakov bar Acha among them.

Many amoraim quote teachings in his name, among them Rabbi Ila, Rabbi Yonah, Rabbi Yosi bar Chanina and Rabbi Yosi ben Rabbi Bun.
