Biography
Rabbi Yaakov bar Zavdi was an amora whose teachings are preserved in the Midrash. He appears in Vayikra Rabbah, where he opens a derashah by joining a verse from Yechezkel about Israel no longer being a reminder of sin with the vision of Yeshayahu describing the serafim standing above with their six wings, weaving the two prophetic passages together.
His name is also linked with material in Bereshit Rabbah, set among discussions of the verses of Sefer Bereshit and their aggadic meaning. In these passages he is found in the company of other Sages of his generation, contributing to the homiletic reading of the Torah’s narratives.
רבי יעקב בר זבדי היה אמורא ארצישראלי בדור הרביעי המוזכר פעמים רבות בתלמוד הירושלמי.
