Biography
Rabbi Tarfon was a Tanna of the Land of Israel whose rulings and discussions appear across both halachic and aggadic literature. He is repeatedly recorded as a participant in the deliberations held “in the upper chamber of Rabbi Tarfon” (ba-aliyat Rabbi Tarfon), a setting in which sages gathered to weigh questions of law and conduct.
He is closely associated with Rabbi Akiva: the Midrash records that Rabbi Tarfon gave Rabbi Akiva a large sum of silver to invest, illustrating their partnership. He also appears in blessings and matters of tefillah, such as his view on the blessing recited over water (Devarim Rabbah).

רבי טַרְפוֹן היה תנא ממשפחת כהנים המיוחסים לעזרא הסופר שחי בדור שאחרי המרד הגדול. מתלמידיו של רבן יוחנן בן זכאי ומתלמידי בית שמאי.[דרוש מקור] רב, חבר ובר פלוגתא לרבי עקיבא. בית מדרשו של רבי טרפון היה בעיר לוד. מכונה בתלמוד ירושלמי בתואר "אביהן של כל ישראל", וכן: "רבן של כל ישראל". מוזכר במשנה ארבעים ותשע פעמים, לרוב כשהוא חלוק עם רבי עקיבא שהיה תלמיד חבר שלו, אך גם כאשר הוא חלוק עם רבי אליעזר, רבי יהושע בן חנניה, רבי אלעזר בן עזריה, רבי ישמעאל ורבי מאיר, ורבות הלכות אחרות שחידש ועליהן אין חולק.
Rabbi Tarfon or Tarphon, a Kohen, was a member of the third generation of the Mishnah sages, who lived in the period between the destruction of the Second Temple and the fall of Betar.
