Biography
Rabbi Abbahu is among the most widely cited amoraim in the passages preserved in our library, appearing in talmudic discussions as well as in midrashic expositions (such as Bereishit Rabbah and other aggadic collections). His teachings range across questions of repentance — including the celebrated statement, cited in Berachot, that “in the place where penitents stand, the wholly righteous cannot stand” — and the world to come, where he taught that in the future all will marvel at those who heeded God despite lacking formal learning.
He is also recorded interpreting Scripture through parable (mashal), as in his image (in Bereishit Rabbah) of a king’s son in a cradle from whom the flies flee when his nurse arrives.

Rabbi Abbahu was a Jew and Talmudist of the Talmudic Academies in Syria Palaestina from about 279 to 320 CE and is counted a member of the third generation of Amoraim. He is sometimes cited as Rabbi Abbahu of Kisrin.
